Reading Classes Continue in 2013

On-the-Move is proud to be able to offer free reading classes to adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities for our second year. There are four 6-week sessions this year. The first session is underway, and other sessions begin April 18th, September 26th, and November 7th. Students are required to attend all 6 weeks of the session they are registered for– this is not a drop-in program. Call or email the office to get registered. Space is limited and registration is open for all sessions.

Our community classes for adults with special needs are funded by a grant from the City of Portland through Southeast Uplift’s Small Grants Program. Thank you!

Socializing Colorfully African Dance Workshop

Congratulations to the 15 dancers who performed in an African Dance workshop and showcase in November and December. Taught by local artist Bobby Fouther, participants had two rehearsals and performed for family and friends in mid-December. The free class was open to Portland residents with developmental disabilities and included participants from On-the-Move and other community members. This program was made possible through a grant from SE Uplift/ City of Portland.

Volunteer Training October 8th!

Interested in tutoring for our very special free reading program? This is a short term volunteer position working on literacy skills with adults with developmental disabilities. The class runs for 8 weeks, beginning Thursday, October 18th and ending with a graduation ceremony on Thursday, December 13th (no class on Thanksgiving Day). Please call or email Molly for more information or to sign up as a volunteer! Training will be Thursday, October 11 from 3:00-5:00 at the On-the-Move office in SE Portland. No experience is necessary, just an interest in working with diverse populations.

Family Picnic Saturday, August 25th

Our family picnic is just around the corner! We will meet Saturday, August 25th, from 3:00-5:00 in the Richmond School field, right across the street from our office. On-the-Move will grill up some veggie burgers. If you are able, please bring a dish to share. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Volunteer Tutors Needed for July Reading Class

We are looking for volunteer tutors for our upcoming free reading class, starting in July. Tutors will assist adults with special needs in gaining literacy skills at a variety of levels. Tutors should have good reading skills, an interest in working with diverse populations, and be able to pass a criminal background check. The reading session lasts 8 weeks, Thursday afternoons from 3:00-4:30 from July 12 through August 30. There will be a training for volunteers on Thursday, June 28, 3:00-5:00 at the On-the-Move office, 3:00-5:00. Previous volunteers have described this short-term opportunity as valuable, meaningful, and fun. Call or email for more information or to register as a tutor!

Volunteers Needed for Our Next Reading Program Session April 12 – June 14!

A volunteer helping a participant improve his reading skills!

Our first reading session was a huge success and we’re gearing up for the next session which begins on April 12th. Volunteers are needed to assist with the class!

While no experience is necessary, volunteers should have good reading skills and the desire to work with a wonderfully diverse community.

The class is a combination of group lessons and one on one tutoring. Volunteers are paired with students to help with the one on one portion of the class.

Volunteer training takes place on April 5th from 3-5 p.m. at On-the-Move!

We hope you can assist in this much needed program and please, pass the word along to anyone you think may be interested!
